I guess just like BP the retail Energy Market has not developed as envisaged. Retail energy and the scope for broadband business must be Chicken Feed from the Oil Barons point of view. Whats the point of their involvement considering that Shell Energy is just a drip in Ocean. Let's see what happens and if they off load it, who will take it on as this broken market shrinks and with no options for changing suppliers.
One thing is for sure theres absolutely no benefits being under any oil barons banner.
As Nardwuar would say Keep on Rocking in a Free world - doo doot do doo doot doot

In the current market, I doubt anyone would take it on. If they do decide to leave the retail market, they will probably just tell ofgem that they are ceasing the energy business and expect them to use the SOLR

I've read that 62 suppliers have gone, no doubt lots of those should never been allowed to operate in the first place. i guess that a good number of the 24 left are in a fragile state or being propped up. I guess if any of these business could operate under their own business modals then energy prices would be way above what we are paying and not set by the fools at ofgem. Think will see some others going down the pan via SOLR as stated.

Shell presumably take the view that in the long term the UK market is not worth being in. Restrictions on petrol cars not far away and it probably knows that the government will wake up one day and realise any form of central boilers are not to be. Indeed wet systems should not “be.”
24 left in the market. As someone else has posted the crisis of October 2021 did not really precipitate the demise of most if not all those that failed. They were going to fail anyway. Octopus like to think big but have a look at their accounts and they make you wonder how long they will survive. Even borrowing more money and pushing surface heat pumps, not because of viability but because they have convinced some in government they are a good thing.
