You just prompted me to go and download my last two months bills. It's so confusing. In Apr I had a cancelled bill amount that doesn't match any previous bill. My June bill shows no payment received yet my bank shows the DD was taken!
Sigh. Very shoddy! I guess I need to contact them...

Wow, this is a slow slog through the figures, but I've discovered that they overcharged me for 8 days at the end of March at the higher standing charge rate that only came into effect in April. They correctly split the usage to estimate the changeover on 31/3/22, but didn't do it for standing charges. They charged 26 days in March, and 35 days in April (at the higher rate).
That could be a nice little earner for Shell if they did that to all their customers!! Anyone fancy checking their bills?
It amounts to about £3 overcharge for me. Times that by the number of customers... 🧐

Aha, so after over an hour, I have discovered a standing charge overcharge during the price rise and that my previous credit was correct. It was just for the electricity on my account + VAT. So now to contact Shell and ask for a standing charge refund and where did my May payment go?
So anyone else see that overcharge?

I have the answer to my issue. It is me sending in my readings. The site lets me do that but they also use the smart meter. My sending a reading messes up the system causing recalculations. I ought not to submit readings. Also Shell will be offering fixed price contracts shortly.

Applying my brain to the concept of Shell offering fixed price contracts it may be that they realise prices will come down and therefore people locking in today could be on a higher price in the longer term. The gentleman who had advised me talked of a 12 month fix. However, if you fix for 12 months today surely they will take account of the potential rise in October? So you fix high. If prices stabilise and come down, as they are likely to, you could then find you are worse off. Speculation. Have to monitor the position.

Are they likely to come down soon? I read somewhere the October cap is likely to be higher than first thought. I also saw they predict the March cap to go up as well, I cannot remember where I saw that bit. Not seen it since so hopefully was “fake news”. It’s difficult to know what to do atm to be honest.

Fixed deals are always a gamble. At least at pure planet we could read between the lines on the answers that the moderators posted in the community. That helped me play the system quite successfully, until it went pop! PS Did you two see the overcharge when the prices went up in April?

I did not have any overcharge in April. My bill was as I expected it to be.
Prices? Yes a gamble. Fresh thought is being given to the stupid situation where electricity costs go up disproportionately to the cost of supply as no regard is had to the element coming from non gas sources. If that thought works through it may affect the October increase. With respect to gas a lot must depend on Ukraine 🇺🇦 . A solution there of some sort that creates stability will see a drop. I suspect that is likely over the next 6 months. There may also be more government intervention that holds back price increases, or rather an increase in the level of them.
My guess is Shell see this, as will others, so they can maintain profits if they produce a fix now at a high level knowing the public don’t generally think things through and may be keen with the fear of more to pay in October without thinking over the situation and the likelihood/chances of a drop. I have no doubt the major suppliers are busy calculating the what ifs and where they can take advantage plus, to be fair to them, maintain their own stability.
In a year’s time we probably then see those that fixed at a high rate wanting the government to legislate to get them out of their fix despite the decision to fix being theirs. The press don’t help though. They take one example of a person’s problem and enlarge it to make us believe it is a massive problem. They made dealings at the Passport Office and DVLA into such an issue. They will have people believing very high prices are coming, which is what the industry wants them to do.

I'm tempted to sit tight on the variable for a while longer and see how things pan out over the next few months.

Agreed. Too much can happen and quite quickly. Anyway we are getting a credit of £400 toward our bill in the latter months of this year plus for us OAPs a little extra winter fuel allowance.

The whole market for switching has stalled, suppose you could say it's a stalemate position as no supplier will be intent on sending out loss leaders to obtain more customers by only achieving very slim margins. The switching game appears long gone and with little chance of a loyalty fix. I wonder how long we'll be with Shell. In the scheme of things I can't complain, it's all been very smooth in a fractured market.

Standing Charge Electricity 31 days x 23.68p per day £7.34 Usage charge single rate - electricity £86.21

Standing Charge Electricity 31 days x 23.68p per day £7.34 Usage charge single rate - electricity £86.21 As to the possibility of a fixed price contract, I've considered one as OVO is offering the following in my area OVO 1 year fixed Standing Charge 54.66p per day Per kWh 37.76p Current prices (incl VAT) Standing Charge 48.14p per day Per kWh 28.29p Which, it theory at least, is less than the increase likely in October However, I feel it wrong to leave Shell after the install my new SMETS2 meter tomorrow. Also, I expect prices to come down after October, as OPEC and the US increase oil production, the US Producers had closed some 5/7ths of their wells during Covid as demand and prices dropped, once they come back on stream prices should stabilise, but that can take up to a year, and I assume most of them didn't ramp back up before February.

Interesting. Which kinda adds fuel (🤣) to the idea of sitting tight with Shell.
