Back in January, I got a message on my IHD to inform me that my supplier is now Shell. But only my electric meter is smart, the gas still showing PP's name and tariffs. I've just gone to submit my gas reading to find that the electric is also now asking for a reading where it wasn't before, the previous reading designated as Smart. I'm not sure what's going on, anyone else having the same experience?

Nope. My dumb meter is still gratifyingly dumb. No issue for me... 🤣 I guess you need to contact Shell?

The day after I posted this my app finally started working, instead of being directed to the website. It may have been the transition period, but my electric meter is smart again, although my gas smart meter is still dumb. I have contacted Shell asking when it will be "switched on " but I only receive generic " we are working hard to get your meters connected " , etc, etc, but no real answer of what or if there is a problem.

Methinks not:
"Thank you for reaching out to us. Here at Shell Energy we strive to offer exceptional customer service and aim to resolve all queries as swiftly as possible and to the best of our ability. We have tried to reach you on the phone but unfortunately you were unavailable, so we left a voice mail. Regarding your meter, we were unable to regain the communication whit [sic] it because it is not commisioned [sic] by your previous supplier. The solution is to exchange the meter."
They are coming out to install a SMETS2 meter on 16th June.
I find it 'odd' they say it's 'not commissioned' when I know it was definitely working between Oct/Nov 2018, and April 2019.
I have to admit, with the current discussions around permitting 'surge pricing,' I'm not totally convinced having one is a good idea.

I plugged in my IHD the other day and it seems to be quicker at reacting to power usage than before. Not quite instant. I note my ticking over cost is now about 4p to 5p per hour. That is with nothing on other than the TV on standby, two fridges and two freezers. Plus all my bulbs and a number of smart plugs in standby. I am trying to find out from Philips what the current drain is for their bulbs and smart plugs when in standby mode. I suppose I can find out by switching everything off! Will try that when my wife goes out!

gwyndy, was your smart meter working for PP?, it seems strange, although they still haven't connected to my smets2 gas meter since the switchover. I've just gone to submit my readings and my electric has decided to become smart again.

Duppy, no it was SMETS1 and despite Solarplicity finally getting it to work a few months before I switched to PP, it never worked during my time with PP. The friend I helped switch to PP has the same meter (L&G E470) and hers started working with Shell in February.

gwyndy, I thought the point of the DCC was to recommission your smets1 meter. It must be easier to swap it out, although your concerns about the mooted surge pricing is a valid consideration for not getting it swapped. If you can read the meters ok and you don't mind submitting the readings, I would wait a while, but obviously it's up to you

So what's the score with this surge pricing lark? Are companies going to start dynamic pricing? How will they let poor a consumer know that now is a particularly bad time to put a drier full of towels on cupboard dry setting? Is there an equivalent shrink pricing too? Is that too many questions? 😊

Good article. Doesn't mention how punters will know when is a good time to put the washing on. I guess time will tell and as hinted, household devices might make their own decisions.
Hey Siri, why are the dishes still dirty? Well Quidsy, you saved 1.4p by not washing up yet...

I take back what I said about my smart meter appearing to be operating better. It isn't. A lot of the time it tells me it is waiting for info the electricity use. Gas is always fine. I am advised that my Hue bulbs and smart plugs use about 0.2 watts per hour. Where I am that is roughly 47.50p per annum each.

My neighbour's got a Smart Meter engineer from British Gas there this morning, apparently they installed a meter last year, which for reasons unknown, has never sent any readings to British Gas, she's now been lumped with a massive bill because they've underestimated her usage, and they are now coming out to install a Smart Token meter, so that they can arrange for her to pay back the bill via that.

gwyndy, that's so wrong. Was she ever informed that the meter wasn't sending readings or asked to submit readings herself. It seems like a massive fail for BG. Perhaps you could recheck the readings and estimated bills to make sure that the new bill is correct. Don't forget the back billing rules where they can't charge for energy used over 12 months ago. Now due to their failures, she is now forced to pay an even higher unit rate as prepayment meter usage is a higher cost per kWh, not withstanding the amount owed due to incorrect estimates.
