gwyndy - perhaps She should contact BBC Radio 4's Money Box....might assist but I guess they get contacted lots....worth a go....moneybox@bbc.co.uk I doubt anything can be done on money owed, but I've heard of recourse on having original meter re installed due to the energy companies wrong approach plus compensation.
Its crap but you've got to fight your corner and why let them come to change the meter. Go back to British Gas and dispute their approach and their errors... Call citizens advice.....get an appointment...

I am giving up on my IHD, again. I thought it may have improved but it’s usefulness is akin to that of a chocolate fireguard. It gives me gas readings with no problem. For electricity it is hit and miss. Often, most of the time, it does not connect to the meter. I can force it to, sometimes, by turning the power off and back on. Until we can have an IHD or system which works and also records what device has been switched on and how much it has cost whilst on, it is of little value. I shall ditch it.

Sounds like a marginal wireless connection maybe? Does it misbehave if the IHD is nearer the meter unit? Is your wifi router also nearby? I believe they can interfere as they can use similar frequencies...
Or the tech could just be pants!

I think it's the tech is pants option. My IHD is again suffering from the fault that was reported on PP's forum and a subsequent fix was offered, but it was short lived My gas usage shows on the IHD ( subject to half hourly updates ) but come midnight the usage disappears and the commutative cost refers only to the standing charge ( which is wrong anyway as shell has not implemented the smart function of my gas meter.

Yeah, that maybe is a slightly different pants aspect. I wondered if gerryhatrick was having a communication of readings problem. Duppy, you seem to be having a pants configuration/programming issue. Just my 2p.

Pants I suspect. It is not quite line of sight from the meter. Not quite in that the IHD (not an IUD I stress, which is what my spellchecker wanted to substitute!) is in my study upstairs and the meter is directly below at street level outside. The electric smart meter is closer to the IHD than the gas one. Not by much. One of the routers, it is a mesh system, is about 6 feet from it. Less clutter on my desk now!

She should not have to pay more. BG installed it. Their problem. On the basis they have not asked her for readings they cannot charge her any extra. It may be her pay meter can be adjusted to the same rate she should be on. They also cannot charge, as mentioned elsewhere, for anything over a year ago. She ought to make contact and dig her heels pointing out it is their mistake and not hers and they must meet any costs.

I've no idea, I keep meaning to ask her about it, I don't even know whether they gave her a copy of her actual meter reading when they changed the meter.
To add insult to injury, the gave her a payment card with the new smart meter that didn't actually work when I went to top it up for her.

After poking online Shell phoned last week regarding a smart meter. I advised that I have torn down the stair wall casing and made the dumb meter a feature of the room providing that added retro design So please make your database and my accounts reflects that we don't want smart meter.

Well my new SMETS2 Meter and IHD have been installed, never heard of the make of meter (Alcara), and so far the IHD isn't receiving any data - yipeee. If it doesn't by Monday, I will move it and see what happens. I'll be honest, I'm not hopeful. selectra.co.uk/energy/providers/shell-energy/smart-meter

Just for curiosity gwyndy, what make is your IHD? Even if it does start working the novelty of checking your usage soon wears off, although it does make readings easier, even though they are supposed to be sent. I got fed up of telling them my gas meter is no longer smart, I gave up after numerous requests for photos etc
