gwyndy, did you follow any of the steps on the ovo forum re checking the HAN light, resetting it, was it commissioned on install? It's seems you have a few options, 1, contact Shell customer service (good luck with that), to try getting it working. 2, place it face down If the resetting screen annoys you, Checking occasionally to see it's working 3, turn it off at the plug, again checking occasionally 4, turn it off, unplug it and put it in a drawer/cupboard/use as a doorstop. I wonder if the abysmal service is the reason that shell don't have a customer forum like others do, anything posted on there would probably show that you that you are not alone.

Number 4 of Duppy's advice is the best option.

I actually used to look forward to having an 'In Home Display' (Well at least when I used an OWL meter) the ones supplied with 'Smart Meters' have been pretty much pointless. I'm 32nd in the queue to webchat with Shell Energy - lucky me.
Option 4 will not work, pressing the power button, or for that matter pressing and holding the power button, only causes it to reset.
Well 28 minutes later, I'm 3rd in the queue.
Edit 2.
Well Shell webchat's useless.
'Samir M.' told me ''It can take up to 28 days for you Smart Meter installation to work...'
Which is a bit odd, as the literature says the IHD should work immediately.
I was typing a response asking what I should do with the annoyingly constantly resetting IHD, and he bid me a nice day and killed the chat. I don't even have a record of the chat.
Bunch of idiots.

If you can't take the battery out, it will eventually go flat. Then off will be the only possible mode! 🤣 Dumb Meters!

Well, after complaining to Shell about the way Samir cut me off, Tarik (who sounded Dutch) phoned me, and he said pretty much the same thing - only it was 'it could take anywhere from 10-28 days to work, and there isn't much we can do to speed it up, sorry.'
Ho hum.

In the ongoing saga, 28 days have passed, and Shell are now going to get their Smart Meter team to look into it.

A, not very helpful, response from Shell: Can anyone recommend a better imagehost?

Hi everyone, I've just gone to take my gas meter reading before the prices go up on sat, and the display is blank! It won't wake up. Any ideas anyone? I have contacted Shell, awaiting reply, but not sure if they will get back to me intime. If they have to estimate it, will that be detrimental to me? What happens if I don't get it fixed before 1 Oct? Any thoughts?

Hey Angela,
Long time no see. Hope you're well!
Not sure how to fettle a smart meter as there's no on/off switch to reboot it. If it is smart and sending readings through, all is well as Shell will have the right info.
Actually, just realised you mentioned Gas meter 🤦🏼 I think they have a battery. Not sure how they are replaced.
Fingers crossed Shell respond. Or some others here might have experience....

Hi there Angela, not more can I add to 25 quids greeting other than good to see your post even though you've got meter announces.
I guess that hopefully the smart meter has been doing its job and theres not much jiggery or pokery to sort out when it sparks up.
Hope it gets sorted and as back in the old days and as Woz would say Post back.
Cheers

Hi angelabikerbabe, just seen your post, have you tried waking the meter up by pressing the green button. Gas meter displays are usually blank until woken to preserve the battery Which are supposed to last 10 years

Like many others I relegated my IDU to a cupboard as it was choosy about which type of energy it was in the mood to display and the rates seemed wrong. Yesterday I got it out and plugged it in. It seems different. The display seems clearer, and it very quickly picked up the signals from the Smart Meter, unlike in the past. It even displays the correct charging rates. Must have had an update.
I might now leave it out and on, for if I am too happy I can look at it to get depressed again. 😃

I am sure some of you will have come across but I have indulged in the Ivie product and app. It cost me but I thought it may be more useful than the IDU supplied originally which doesn’t tell me much. So far so good and it tells me more about what is happening in the house. I am new to it so a learning curve ahead.
There is still the issue that it uses power to run! Plus looking at it can bring about depression!
It is beginning to look as though my cost of energy this year is not going to be as high as envisaged. I am using less than last year, not intentionally, although in the last month or so I have made some adjustments to lower the background temperatures. I was though already using less energy before that. With the government rebates coming through my annual cost could well be less than last year’s.
